President Earl H. Potter III visits with a student during the 2008 Neighborhood Walk through the University-Southside neighborhood.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - More than a week of special activities are planned to welcome St. Cloud State students for the start of fall classes, which begin Monday, Aug. 24.
Students who arrive early to move into lodging near campus will be personally welcomed by St. Cloud State and the community during the annual "Neighborhood Walk" 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20.
The walk is an opportunity for officials and staff from St. Cloud State, the city, the St. Cloud Police Department, the St. Cloud Fire Department and neighborhood associations to introduce themselves, answer questions, share safety information and provide updates on university activities.
Among the 75 people who will walk the neighborhood are St. Cloud State President Earl H. Potter III, St. Cloud Police Chief Dennis Ballantine, St. Cloud Fire Chief William Mund and St. Cloud Technical College officials.
Register to serve as a "Neighborhood Walk" volunteer.
Students who will live in campus residence halls will move in on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23, with the help of more than 330 Husky Haulers, a volunteer group of faculty, staff, residents of the community, members of Delta Zeta, Kappa Phi Omega and Theta Chi, and more than 130 athletes from the soccer, football and volleyball teams.
New students will move in beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, with returning residence hall students moving in Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
Streets in the St. Cloud State area will be congested on the 22nd and 23rd because as many as 3,000 students and their families will arrive on campus those two days.
Once students are on campus, they’ll be treated to a week of "Husky Kickoff" activities, including an evening ice cream social Aug. 23; a Life Unlimited motivational speaker who will advise students on learning to live life to the fullest Aug. 25; and an Outdoor Endeavors-sponsored Dutch Oven Cooking Contest from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 27, followed by a Johnny Holm Band concert.
A new feature of Husky Kickoff this year is "House Party 101" at the Atwood Memorial Center at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25. The event is an interactive, mock house party with students demonstrating how to make smart decisions around alcohol use and parties. The alcohol education "party" is happening with the help of Delta Zeta, Student Government, the Center for Student Organizations and Leadership Development, Residential Life and the University Program Board.
