ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State University President Earl H. Potter III announced today that Michael Spitzer, retiring provost and vice president for academic affairs, has been named provost emeritus.

“Dr. Spitzer’s contributions confirmed the value of having a provost to help lead a university of our stature and size,” said Potter. Spitzer was the first person to fill the post after it was decided to add a provost’s duties to those of the vice president for academic affairs.

Spitzer announced in July of last year his intention to retire at the close of the 2008-09 year after six years in his position at St. Cloud State.

Devinder Malhotra will succeed him as provost on July 1. View a story about Malhotra.

As academic vice president and provost, Spitzer provided administrative leadership and advised the president on all academic and operational components of the university. He oversaw the five colleges of business, education, fine arts & humanities, science & engineering, and social sciences; and was responsible for learning resources & technological services, graduate studies, continuing studies, curriculum, personnel, enrollment management, sponsored programs and international studies.

During his tenure, the university achieved a highly successful self study and Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation. Under his leadership the university initiated its first doctoral program and greatly expanded its online program offerings. Nursing, regulatory affairs, Jewish and religious studies and manufacturing engineering management are some of the programs launched during Spitzer’s years as provost.

Prior to joining St. Cloud State, Spitzer served as vice president for academic affairs at Worcester State College; dean of the school of arts and sciences at the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome; and dean of the school of humanities at the New York Institute of Technology, Old Westbury.
