Memorial vigil June 10 for murdered physician

Monday, June 1, 2009

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Women's Center is sponsoring a candlelight vigil to honor the work of George Tiller, a Kansas abortion provider shot and killed May 31.

The vigil is 9 p.m. June 10 in Barden Park, adjacent to the Miller Center and Administrative Services at St. Cloud State.

"The pro-choice community is saddened and outraged by this act of violence," reads a flyer for the event (PDF).

The vigil, which will not include speeches, marches or protests, will be a show of support for a woman's right to reproductive health care. It also will give silent witness to the women served by Tiller, according to the flyer.

Also sponsoring the vigil are SCSU Students for Choice and Central Minnesota Citizens for Choice.

Tiller was murdered while serving as an usher at his Lutheran church in Wichita, Kans.

Tiller was a second-generation physician and owner/operator of Women’s Health Care Services from 1975 until the time of his death

Candles will be provided.
