Students help organize Sauk River cleanup

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Members of the Friends of Sauk River, the city of St. Cloud and St. Cloud State students are organizing a clean-up day ‒ the Sauk River Earth Day Clean-up ‒ for a portion of the Sauk River.

Volunteers will remove garbage and debris along the banks of the river from 9:00 to noon on Saturday, April 18.  The cleanup will begin with a meeting at 8:30 a.m. at River’s Edge Park, located along the Sauk River between Third Street North and 10th Avenue North in Waite Park.  Food and beverages will be served to volunteers following the cleanup, which ends at noon.  Free t-shirts will be provided.  Rain date is Saturday, April 25.

Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy footwear and bring a pair of work gloves.  Trash bags and some gloves will be provided.  Young children must be with an adult and may not go on or into the water.

Students in Environmental and Technological Studies 456 are organizing the event as a class project for the third year in a row.  Last year, despite snow on the late-April clean-up day, 30-40 volunteers responded to the students’ request for help.
