Alumnus named "Hero" Award recipient

Ottawa, Ontario – St. Cloud State University alumnus Robert Animikii Horton ’06 was recently awarded the Dr. Freda Ahenakew Award in Education by the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). The annual award recognizes individuals with exceptional academic abilities and a commitment to extra-curricular activities. The award is one of 14 “Heroes of Our Time” scholarships available through the AFN; each scholarship is worth $2,000.
Horton, who majored in sociology at St. Cloud State, is now a master’s student in sociology at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Earlier this year, he received the 2008 National Aboriginal Role Model Award from the National Aboriginal Health Organization. In addition to being a student, Horton is a youth advocate, sociologist, spoken word poet, and a social and political activist involved with indigenous rights.
