Banaian named interim dean

Effective Aug. 1, economist and business-conditions researcher King Banaian is the interim dean of the School of Public Affairs.

Banaian, who has taught at St. Cloud State since 1984, is director of the School of Public Affairs Research Institute, which develops solutions for public- and private-sector problems in the region. He co-authors the St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report, Central Minnesota's definitive analysis of economic activity.

His teaching experience includes monetary and macroeconomic theory, forecasting, public finance, law and economics, economics of sports, introduction to Soviet studies and economics of developing countries. He was state representative for Minnesota House District 15B in 2011-13.

The School of Public Affairs embraces the undergraduate and graduate programs of the Criminal Justice, Economics, Political Science, and Geography and Planning departments. 

Banaian succeeds Orn Bodvarsson, who accepted a post as dean of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies at California State University – Sacramento. Sacramento State is a public university of nearly 30,000 students located 90 minutes northeast of San Francisco.

A search for a permanent dean will begin in the fall.
