St. Cloud State’s student-run radio station 88.1 FM KVSC recently earned numerous awards for news reporting in state and regional competitions.

KVSC staffers won three first place awards in the 2013 Society of Professional Journalism (SPJ) Student Competition. St. Cloud State student broadcasters competed against other college students within the five-state area. KVSC students have earned the most SPJ awards to date in the region.

KVSC reporters also earned five first-place 2013 Minnesota Associated Press Broadcasters Awards. In this professional contest, KVSC earned best in show in the spot/hard news category in Radio Class One.

“KVSC’s success in the awards competition comes because students are applying what is learned in the classroom in a real-world working newsroom,” said Jo McMullen-Boyer, station manager. “I’m continually inspired by how students use the ‘working lab’ KVSC provides to hone their skills in storytelling with fairness, creativity and desire.”
