Miller earns $25K grant

Scott Miller, professor of music, is the recipient of a $25,000 McKnight Composition Fellowship, an unrestricted grant that acknowledges excellence in music composition.

Miller is a composer of electroacoustic, orchestral, chamber, choral and multimedia works performed at venues throughout North America and Europe. Listen to "Three Gestures," a 2006 piece that features clarinet, cello and piano.

He is among four Composer Fellows honored this year by the St. Paul-based American Composers Forum and its funding partner, the Minnesota non-profit McKnight Foundation.

Miller's works have been heard at venues such as the International Music Festival/New Music Plus in Brno, Czech Republic, and the Galerie EXPRMNTL, in Toulouse, France.

He teaches theory, composition and courses that lead to the Department of Music's bachelor's degree in Music and New Media.

Miller holds a bachelor's degree from State University of New York, Oneonta, and a master's degree from University of North Carolina. His doctorate is from University of Minnesota. 

In addition to the McKnight Composer Fellowship, Miller has received honors and awards from the Jerome Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board and the MUSICA NOVA 98 International Electroacoustic Music Competition.

Composers honored with Miller were St. Paul pianist Randy Bauer, St. Paul percussionist Joshua Musikantow and David Evan Thomas, a Minneapolis pianist, singer and trumpet player.  

There were 82 applicants for the fellowships.
