The Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization is named for the late Senator Paul Simon (D-Ill.), who supported international education and foreign language learning. In its 11th year, the award is presented annually by NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Read a NAFSA newsletter story that spotlights St. Cloud State (PDF).

“Our international students add vibrancy to our academic community, and their presence in our classes brings an important international perspective to all students,” said Potter. “The internationalization of St. Cloud State is an ongoing process with an in-place strategy, strong foundations of international activity and broad community support.”

This is the second award for international efforts St. Cloud State has earned this year. In January, the University earned an Andrew Heiskell Award for its partnership with Universidad de Concepcion in Concepcion, Chile.

Also receiving the Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization are:

  • Colorado State University, Fort Collins
  • Green River Community College, Auburn, Wash.
  • Lone Star College System, Houston, Texas
  • University of South Florida, Tampa Bay

“We are proud to present the 2013 Simon Award to these colleges and universities for their comprehensive commitment and remarkable achievements in bringing global education opportunities to their students,” said Marlene M. Johnson, NAFSA executive director and CEO. “They are excellent models for how higher education across the country can and must innovate to prepare our students for the global economy we live in today.”

St. Cloud State has more than 1,000 students from about 80 nations. It is ranked 13th in international enrollment among U.S. master’s level institutions.
