"SYMBOL," a documentary about the removal of swastika symbols from the Cathedral of St. Mary in St. Cloud, will premiere in Minnesota and adjacent states 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 on the TPT MN Channel.

Three years in production, "SYMBOL" was created by Gregory Martin, professor of mass communications, St. Cloud State media students and Department of Mass Communications alumni.

”SYMBOL would not have been possible without great student work, and the support of SCSU mass communications, the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education, the administration, and the local dioceses and community volunteers,” said Martin.

The documentary runs about 26 minutes. It chronicles the removal of five swastikas that were part of the Catholic church's roof-line facade dating back to 1930.

In 2006, the swastikas were replaced by five disks illustrating Christian mysteries such as the baptism of Jesus.

The swastika, or broken cross, which has pre-Christian roots, was appropriated as a symbol by Germany's Nazi party and used before and during World War II.

European Holocaust and war deaths totalling more than 50 million brought the swastika into disrepute as a symbol of oppression and genocidal racism.

TPT MN reaches nearly every Minnesota household via broadcast and cable services.

"SYMBOL" is co-sponsored by these St. Cloud State entities: Jewish Studies program and the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education.

Support was provided by the Office of Provost, School of Graduate Studies and the Office of the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities.

The Department of Mass Communications provided technical support.
