Trivia in 3D artwork

Join the fun Feb. 12-14 as KVSC 88.1 FM hosts its trivia marathon.

Through Feb 12, KVSC is accepting registrations for "Trivia in 3D," the Feb. 12-14 trivia marathon at 88.1 on the FM radio dial.

Since 1980, St. Cloud State's student-run, independent public radio station has hosted a trivia weekend.

Through Feb. 10, 62 teams had registered for the 50-hour marathon, which runs 5 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Teams may complete the registration form (PDF) and pay the $45 fee through 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Each team member receives a pair of 3D glasses.

"KVSC’s 31st annual trivia weekend will deliver multi-dimensional trickery," said Jo McMullen-Boyer, station manager. "We will manipulate visual and auditory perceptions with hourly trivia questions on pop culture, history, sports, science and beyond."

Typically, nine questions are broadcast each hour. During speed rounds the questions are doubled. Visual questions are posed with images available at the radio station's Stewart Hall offices. Contestants can expect aural questions as well.

Teams answer questions over approximately 30 telephone lines, staffed by student, staff and community volunteers. Scoring is computerized.

The marathon is simulcast locally by UTVS, the student-run campus television station, on Charter Communications channel 21. It is streamed live on the UTVS Web site at www.utvs.com/21/live.asp.

Minnesota State University, Mankato's KMSU 89.7 FM, the University of Wisconsin-Madison's WSUM 91.7 FM and 90.1FM in Thief River Falls will also simulcast the marathon.

Through Dec. 29, 33 teams were registered. Last year's marathon, "XXX Trivia," drew 76 teams, including teams from Europe and Asia. Team names are cryptic, colorful and, sometimes, anatomically descriptive.

A sampling from this year's early-bird registrants: Porcupine Petting Zoo, Candy-Gram for Mongo, Sigma Phi Nothing and four-time winners Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women.
