India Night 2009 is 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in Atwood Memorial Center's Union Room and Ballroom.

The India Heritage Club (IHC) invites everyone to attend India Night 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in Atwood Memorial Center's Union Room and Ballroom.

Experience an evening filled with delicious food, great entertainment and wonderful people. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Vivaah: Experience the Wedding of a Lifetime.” Indian weddings are known for their glitz and glamour. They also symbolize tradition, celebration and togetherness.

Within the wedding ritual there are events such as “Haldi,” “Mehandi,” “Sangeet” and “Tilak.” Mehandi, for example, is the sacred application of intricate henna designs to the hands and feet of the bride. These events are followed by the main wedding ceremony, when the nuptial knots are tied.

After the wedding ceremony, there are the post wedding functions like “Vidaai” or “Doli,” when the bride leaves for her new home. This is the most emotional moment of any Indian wedding, when the bride takes leave of her family to start a new life.

Wedding practices can vary widely in India, which has hundreds of cultural/linguistic/religious groups among its more than 1.1 billion people.

Tickets are $8 for students, $12 for faculty and members of the community. Children five and younger are free. Tickets go on sale Monday, Oct. 26 at the Atwood Memorial Center information desk and may be purchased at the door Nov. 7.

Stop by the IHC’s promotional booth on the first floor of the Atwood Memorial Center and register to win one of six free tickets to the event. Tickets may also be purchased at the booth.

The IHC is a student organization that promotes and shares Indian culture with the St. Cloud State community.
