Members of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de AztlÜn will mark the beginning of Day of the Dead 2 p.m. Oct. 27 with a ceremony in the Atwood Theatre Lounge.

An Aztec dancing group called Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc will perform.

The ancient holiday is a time for family to remember relatives who have died. It is celebrated Nov. 1-2 in Mexico, and marked by Mexicans and people of Mexican ancestry living elsewhere.

Although the ritual has been merged with Catholic theology, it maintains basic Aztec principles, such as the use of skulls, according to the Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc Web site.

Prior to the ceremony, an altar will be set up in the lounge. Visitors can place an ofrenda de muertos (offering to the dead) on the altar. The altar will stay up through the afternoon of Oct. 30.

Co-sponsoring the event is Multicultural Student Services.
