Through Oct. 19, graduating seniors or students with a bachelor's degree can apply for a grant to fund an academic- or English-teaching experience abroad.

The Fulbright program, named for the late Sen. J. William Fulbright, is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools.

Applications can be delivered for review to Lori Friedman, Fulbright adviser in the Center for International Studies, by Oct. 1. Copies can be forwarded to the U.S. Department of State by Oct. 19. Students are free to manage the entire application process on their own.

Staff at the the Write Place, St. Cloud State's support center for writing skills, can help with the application and proposal-writing process.

More than 1,500 will receive Fulbright grants this year. View the competition timeline.

Fulbright served Arkansas for one term in the House of Representatives and five terms in the Senate. Among his other accomplishments were supporting the founding of the United Nations and questioning American involvement in Vietnam in his 1966 book "The Arrogance of Power."
