History conference Oct. 14

The St. Cloud State University History Department will host the four-day Northern Great Plains History Conference (NGPHC) Oct. 14-17 at the Best Western Kelly Inn, St. Cloud.
Scholars will present papers, chair sessions and provide commentary on topics associated with the northern plains states and Canadian plains provinces.

Among the scholars will be St. Cloud State faculty from the departments of history, economics, criminal justice, English, and theater, film studies and dance.
University graduate students have submitted research papers and several will present work during the conference. The best will be acknowledged with awards.
More than 120 paper proposals and two roundtable proposals have been submitted since last year’s conference in Brandon, Manitoba. Paper topics range from ancient Rome to the Vietnam Conflict and touch all continents save Australia.
Mary Wingerd, associate professor of history at St. Cloud State, will give the keynote address at the conference banquet.
In addition to several sessions on various historical topics, other related events being held at the conference include:
- Walking tour of St. Cloud with local historian Bill Morgan
- Walking tour of Saint John’s University
- Society for Military History field trip to Camp Ripley
- Stearns History Museum tour
- Women’s history interest group and Society for Military History luncheons
