ST. CLOUD, MINN. - Despite an engine failure halfway through the endurance race, the Formula-racing style car designed and driven by engineering students finished 46th in the SAE College Design Series competition in Brooklyn, Mich..

Teams from 91 schools ran May 13-16 at the Michigan International Speedway, competing in eight events.

Because the endurance race carries the largest number of points, the St. Cloud State car’s engine failure halfway through the event significantly hurt the team’s overall position. The car had promised to be competitive, with lap times in the top 20 for the endurance event.

The previous best finish for St. Cloud State engineering students was 52nd overall in the 2006 competition.

The St. Cloud State team finished as follows:

  • 7th of 90 in the cost competition
  • 14th of 64 in acceleration
  • 31st of 88 in the presentation/marketing event
  • 32nd of 66 in the autocross
  • 35th of 66 in the skid pad (handling)
  • 46th of 91 overall, topping Minnesota State University Mankato and the University of Minnesota Duluth
  • 65th of 89 in design
  • Did not finish the endurance/fuel economy race (76 cars started, 37 finished)

On the 2009 team were seniors Matthew Grow of Albertville, Minn., Timothy Kaiser, Sartell, Minn., Isaac Klaehn, Adams, Minn., Adrian Nistler, St. Augusta, Minn., Kyle Roggenkamp, St. Cloud, Minn., and Justin Zollner, St. Cloud, Minn., and junior Justin Kunz, Clearwater, Minn.,
