Friday, January 23, 2009
Dudley Edmondson, nature photographer, is owner/operator of Duluth-based Raptor Works Photography.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Dudley Edmondson, nature photographer and author of the book, "Black and Brown Faces in America’s Wild Places," will speak 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 in the Atwood Memorial Center Theatre at St. Cloud State University.
Edmondson’s book looks closely at diversity in terms of participation in outdoor recreation, exploring 20 African Americans who are deeply involved in the outdoors. The idea for the book was formed when Edmondson realized he was often the only person of color enjoying nature and the outdoors. Through his writing and photography, Edmondson hopes to encourage other people of color to discover the beauty and solitude of nature.
"Nature, without question, is for everyone," Edmondson said. "It knows no race, creed or gender and is cheaper than any therapist you could ever hire."
The event will be open to the public and free of charge.
