Diethelm to perform Nat'l Anthem
Monday, March 10, 2014
Award-winning composer, guitarist and singer Paul “Stretch” Diethelm will perform the National Anthem at the opening game of the March 14-16 National Collegiate Hockey Conference men’s hockey playoff series between top-seeded St. Cloud State University and Miami University.
Diethelm will perform an acoustic set March 14 in the atrium of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, then step on the ice for an electric-guitar instrumental of the Star-Spangled Banner.
The acoustic set is 6:25 p.m.-7:20 p.m. The game is 7:37 p.m.
Diethelm, a 2003 St. Cloud State graduate, is a founder of the Fabulous Armadillos, one of Minnesota’s most popular rock bands. He traveled the world eight years playing guitar and singing in blues rocker Jonny Lang’s band. A song Diethelm co-wrote was the title track on Lang’s 1998 platinum-selling Grammy-nominated “Wander This World” album. The song earned a songwriting award from the SESAC performing rights organization.
In 2013, Diethelm wrote, performed and produced “The Husky Hockey Song,” a rock ‘n’ roll anthem used in the pre-game multimedia experience at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The Huskies (21-8-5) are fourth-ranked nationally and seeded first in the NCHC playoffs, thanks to a league-best record and the Penrose Cup. The Huskies swept Colorado College on the road March 7-8 to secure sole ownership of the NCHC title.
Coach Bob Motzko '87 is a leading candidate for the NCHC's Herb Brooks Coach of the Year Award.
If the Huskies win the best-of-three series they advance to the Frozen Faceoff, the NCHC's March 21-22 tournament championship at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
