Granite walls dedication
Tuesday, October 23, 2012
The restored granite retaining walls on First Avenue will be dedicated during an 11 a.m. Oct. 30 ceremony on the Riverview front lawn.
Built in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the walls line the sidewalk on the east side of the avenue from 8th Street south to University Bridge.
The ceremony will feature the installation of a granite marker that notes the walls' origins. Bill Morgan, American Studies professor emeritus, will deliver remarks about the historical significance of the WPA and its projects. View the event poster (PDF).
The WPA was a Great Depression federal relief agency that put unskilled men to work constructing public projects such as roads, schools and recreation facilities.
University maintenance funds financed the walls' restoration. Restoration was timed to coincide with the City of St. Cloud's First Avenue roadway reconstruction, which was completed this month.
