News Release KVSC celebrates 45thWednesday, May 9, 2012
May 10 marks 45 years of broadcasting by St. Cloud State University’s public radio station, KVSC 88.1 FM. An educational public radio station, KVSC follows a commercial-free alternative music format and provides award-winning news coverage and community events. The staff is composed of students and community volunteers. In the past year the station has earned eight Associated Press Awards and a Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Award. The station first signed on May 10, 1967, with a 10-watt signal that covered a radius of about five miles. Its original dial position was 88.5 FM. The switch to 88.1 FM came in 1983. The KVSC call letters are an acronym for the "Voice of St. Cloud." Today, the station's 16,500 watts cover a 70-mile radius. KVSC offers a blend of progressive rock, jazz, folk, reggae, world, blues and Minnesota music. Additional offerings include educational programming such as "Minnesota History in 90 Seconds," "Earth and Sky" and eight daily newscasts.
