NHEC excavation to begin

Excavation for a $14.7 million expansion and renovation of the National Hockey and Event Center (NHEC) is scheduled to begin April 30.
Herb Brooks Way will be closed between Fourth Avenue South and Third Avenue South. Drivers should follow traffic signs.
Through May 6, pedestrians can use sidewalks east and southeast of the NHEC, along Herb Brooks Way and Third Avenue. On May 7, the construction site will will expand. Look for a temporary asphalt sidewalk along the north edge of the east section of K Lot.
Through May 6, pedestrians will have sidewalk access along the west side of the NHEC. After May 7, concrete barriers and a temporary stairway will route foot traffic past the building's west side.
Beginning May 8, NHEC operations staff will be relocated to a trailer north of the building.
Slated to be complete spring 2013, the expanded and renovated NHEC will be a regional events center, hosting entertainment, retail, conventions and sporting events.
Central to the construction project is a 50,000 square-foot, four-story glass atrium that will extend south from the current facade to Herb Brooks Way. In addition, 20,000 square-feet will be remodeled.
University officials are planning a second expansion/renovation project and pursuing naming rights for the building.
Architects are JLG Architects, Fargo, and Hagemeister Mack Architects, St. Cloud. Construction manager is Donlar Construction, Waite Park.
