Ethiopian Week

The April 9-14 Ethiopian Week is highlighted this year by the launch of a fundraising campaign.

The cultural celebration culminates April 14 with "Experience Ethiopia," a cultural show open to campus and community.

Ethiopian Week is sponsored by the Ethiopian Students Association (ESA). View the Ethiopian Week poster (PDF).

ESA is sponsoring construction of a $5,000 water well in a rural part of Ethiopia. ESA's goal is to raise that sum by Fall Semester 2012.

Ethiopian Week events include:

April 9

ESA members will staff a history, culture and traditions table 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Atwood Memorial Center.

April 10

Learn about traditional childhood games 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the Atwood Mall.

April 11

Learn about ESA's water well project in Ethiopia. Presentations are noon and 1 p.m. in the Oak Room, Atwood Memorial Center.

April 12

Join a coffee ceremony 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the ESA table in Atwood Memorial Center.

Attend a panel discussion of issues dear to international students from Ethiopia. The panel is 5-8 p.m. in the Brickyard on the lower level of Atwood Memorial Center.

April 13

Browse the ESA information table 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Atwood Memorial Center.

April 14

"Experience Ethiopia," a showcase for traditional dances and foods of Ethiopia, is set for 5-8 p.m. in the Cascade Room of Atwood Memorial Center. This event will also feature campus and community speakers.

Ethiopia is an East African nation of more than 80 million people. Its Rift Valley is the source of some of the world's oldest human remains. The coffee bean was first domesticated there. Its distance runners have dominated international competition for decades.

Ethiopian Week is free and open to the public. Parking is free on streets adjacent to campus and a dollar per hour in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp.

Multicultural Student Services is an Ethiopian Week co-sponsor.
