Israeli Apartheid Week

Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein champions the Palestinian cause.

A presentation by renowned political activist Hedy Epstein will highlight Israeli Apartheid Week at St. Cloud State.

Sponsored by Students for a Free Palestine, the April 4-11 series of events will discuss Israeli military rule over Palestinians. View the event poster (PDF).

The 87-year-old Epstein has gained international attention for supporting the Palestinian cause. Among the organizations with whom she has worked is the International Solidarity Movement. A Jewish Holocaust survivor, she lives in St. Louis, Mo.  

Students for a Free Palestine is a student organization that describes itself as students, faculty and community members bringing the Palestine occupation to the forefront of discussion and action at St. Cloud State.

April 4

• "Occupation 101," a 2007 documentary film about the causes of, and American involvement in, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is 5:30 p.m. in the Wick Science Building, Room 116. 

April 5

• A presentation titled "Apartheid: From South Africa to Palestine" is 5:30 p.m. in Atwood Theater.

April 10

• A panel discussion titled "Criminalizing Borders and Cashing In" is 5:30 p.m. in the Granite Room of Atwood Memorial Center. Members of M.E.Ch.A and Students for a Free Palestine will argue that Israel and the U.S. are using walls to oppress and profit in Mexico and Palestine.

April 11

• The Israeli Apartheid Week keynote presentation, "Hedy Epstein: Not in My Name," is 5:30 p.m. in Atwood Ballroom. Epstein has visited the West Bank five times since 2003. She has participated in several non-violent demonstrations in opposition to Israel's occupation of Palestinian land, the 25-foot high cement wall and the demolition of Palestinian homes and olive orchards.

For more than 100 years, Jews and Palestinians have fought over the strip of land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. Each side views that land as its homeland.

Parking is free on the streets adjacent to campus and one dollar per hour in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp.

Israeli Apartheid Week is also sponsored by Social Responsibility Student Organization, Muslim Student Association, Bangladesh Students Association, M.E.Ch.A, Somali Students Association and Saudi Students Association.
