Chile expert to speak

Ed Greaves, associate professor of political science, will speak Jan. 30 about democracy and market liberalization in Chile.

Associate professor of political science and Fulbright scholar Ed Greaves will speak 3 p.m. Jan. 30 on market liberalization and democracy in Chile.

Greaves' presentation in the Glacier South room of Atwood Memorial Center is free and open to the campus and community.

The event is a School of Public Affairs Colloquium. Refreshments will be served 30 minutes before the presentation.

The formal title of Greaves' presentation is "Market Liberalization and the Constraints on Democracy in Post-Dictatorship Chile." Since 1990, Chileans have seen their nation move toward greater democracy, expanded civil liberties and free market economic policies. During the rule of dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), torture, internment, murder and theft were key tools used to govern the South American nation of more than 17 million people.

Greaves, who has taught at St. Cloud State since 2004, holds a doctorate in political science from the University of Florida. He is a specialist in Latin American politics and urban popular movements.

Greaves is a member of the university's Faculty Research Group on Immigrant Workers in Minnesota. He and co-investigator Stephen Philion, associate professor of sociology, are researching the impact of immigrant workers on farm labor practices in Central Minnesota.

Parking is free on streets adjacent to campus and a dollar an hour in the 4th Street Parking Ramp.
