Same-sex marriage seminar

Denny Smith '67 '71, executive director of the St. Cloud-based advocacy group Winning Marriage Equality.

Winning Marriage Equality, a St. Cloud-based non-profit dedicated to promoting equality and respect for LGBT people, will hold a seminar on same-sex marriage 7-8:45 p.m. Dec. 6. 

Titled, “Energizing Allies for Marriage Equality,” this free seminar will be held in the Mississippi Room at the St. Cloud Public Library. 

The seminar will provide a forum for those on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue to discuss controversial topics in a calm and logical manner. 

Denny Smith, executive director of Winning Marriage Equality, will present. Smith, a two-time graduate of St. Cloud State, is a veteran teacher and father of a gay son. View his biography page here.

Although the federal government does not recognize same-sex civil marriage as codified in the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, six states issue same-sex civil marriage licenses.

Same-sex marriage is prohibited in Minnesota. In November 2012, voters in Minnesota will vote on a constitutional amendment that seeks to enshrine the prohibition into law.
