VOTE NO rally

Denny Smith '67 '71, executive director of the St. Cloud-based advocacy group Winning Marraige Equality.

Members of the LGBT communities and their allies will rally 3 p.m. Nov. 16 in Atwood Memorial Center Theater in opposition to a constitutional amendment banning same-sex civil marriage.

Denny Smith, executive director of St. Cloud-based Winning Marriage Equality, will present. Smith, a two-time graduate of St. Cloud State, is a veteran teacher and father of a gay son. View his biography page.

The federal government does not recognize same-sex civil marriage, as codified in the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. However, six states, including neighboring Iowa, issue same-sex civil marriage licenses.

A 1997 Minnesota law prohibits same-sex civil marriage in the North Star state. Minnesota voters will vote in November 2012 on a constitutional amendment that would further enshrine that prohibition into law.
