News Release Roundabout constructionThursday, August 11, 2011
A traffic roundabout at University Drive and Fifth Avenue South is expected to be complete in October. Construction began Aug. 1. Here's what motorists, cyclists and pedestrians can expect near the southwest corner of campus:
Visit the university's Facilities Management website for project plans and detour information.
Construction coincides with the Aug. 20-21 Move-In Weekend, one of the busiest traffic periods in the St. Cloud State academic year. On-campus students enter campus via 16th Street South and the K Lot parking areas, well south of the roundabout construction. This is a long-standing route for residence hall move-in traffic. Public Safety and Residential Life staff will be on hand to assist, as will volunteer Husky Haulers. Students living in rental units west of campus will enjoy clear access via Ninth Avenue South and the Minnesota Highway 23/Fifth Avenue South and Minnesota Highway 23/Seventh Avenue South corridors, among other routes. Advocates say simplicity, reduced crash severity and lower maintenance costs are among the reasons the traffic-control strategy is becoming popular in Minnesota. When completed, the University Drive roundabout will be one of a half-dozen in the St. Cloud area.
