Badawi to keynote Islam Week

Speaking April 15 is Jamal Badawi, Muslim scholar, lecturer and founder of the Islamic Information Foundation, a non-profit that promotes a better understanding of Islam and improved relations among Muslims and non-Muslims.

Muslim scholar and lecturer Jamal Badawi will keynote Islam Awareness Week April 12-16 at St. Cloud State University.

His presentation, "Is Co-existence Feasible? An Islamic Response," is noon April 15 in the Cascade Room of Atwood Memorial Center (AMC).

During his lectures Badawi speaks from a "people of the book" world view that respects Judaism and Christianity. Listen to two excerpts from a Badawi lecture on Muslim/non-Muslim relations:

Badawi holds master's and doctoral degrees from Indiana University. He is best known, perhaps, for producing a 352-segment television series about Islam that aired on networks around the world.

An Egyptian-born Canadian, Badawi will also participate in an inter-faith panel discussion (PDF) the evening of April 15 at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

Other Islam Awareness Week events:

Fouzi Slisli will present "Al-Quds (Jerusalem): A History of Co-existence Under Islamic Rule" 4:30 p.m. April 13 in the Cascade Room of AMC. Slisli is an assistant professor of human relations and multicultural education at St. Cloud State. He holds degrees from Mohammed First University in Morocco and University of Essex in Great Britain.

A series of short films about Islam will be screened 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 16 in Atwood Theatre.
