Reconstructing Rwanda

The president of the Friends of Rwanda Association will speak 7 p.m. April 6 in the ballroom of Atwood Memorial Center.

Mathilde Mukantabana will discuss how Rwandans are rebuilding their lives and communities in the wake of a 1994 genocide in the central African nation. View the event poster (PDF).

In a 1999 Human Rights Watch report estimated the death toll at 800,000. Against a backdrop of civil war, members of the Tutsi minority and some from the majority Hutu ethnic group were massacred.

Since then Rwanda has become a model for developing nations and is considered by some to be Africa's biggest success story.

Mukantabana was born and reared in Rwanda. Her non-profit American relief organization has organized workshops and conferences about the Rwandan situation.

She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Burundi and two master's degrees from California State University, Sacramento.

She is a professor history at Cosumnes River College, a community college in Sacramento.

Mukantabana will join in a reception at 5 p.m. in the Atwood Theatre Lounge.

The event is sponsored by these St. Cloud State entities: Department of Communication Studies, Women's Action, Women's Center and the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education.
