Forensic team triumphs

Ben Kaufman took 1st and 4th place in Dramatic Poetry at the Mid-America Forensics Association Tournaments.

St. Cloud State University Forensics has excelled at several tournaments this fall, both as a team and through its individual members.  

The team finished fourth out of 14 teams in School Sweepstakes at the Vocal Viking Invitational speech and debate tournament on Oct. 30-31. Many team members also walked away with individual awards at the tournament including a first-place finish in Program of Oral Interpretation.

Team members also won individual awards at the Mid-America Forensics Association Tournaments and the Twin Cities Forensic League Tournament.

Vocal Viking Invitational Tournament individual honors:

• Thomas Opatz (Cambridge, Minn.) – 1^st place in Program of Oral Interpretation, 2^nd place in Dramatic Interpretation, 3^rd in Poetry Interpretation and 7^th in Mini-Interpretation

• Katlyn Carson (St. Paul Park, Minn.) – 4^th place in Poetry Interpretation and 4^th place in After Dinner Speaking

• Jacenta Boser (Shoreview, Minn.) – 5^th place in Informative Speaking

Mid-America Forensics Association Tournaments individual honors:         

• Ben Kaufman (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) – 1^st and 4^th place in Dramatic Poetry, 4^th in Prose Interpretation,  and 5^th place in Poetry Interpretation and Program of Oral Interpretation

• Thomas Opatz (Cambridge, Minn.) – 9^th place in Program of Oral Interpretation

Twin Cities Forensics League Tournaments individual honors:

• Katlyn Carson (St. Paul Park, Minn.) – 1^st place in Poetry Interpretation and 9^th place in Prose Interpretation

• Thomas Opatz (Cambridge, Minn.) – 3^rd place in Drama and 4^th place in Poetry Interpretation

Forensics teaches students a variety of important skills such as public speaking, research, organization, leadership, group work and critical thinking. Members have immense freedom in choosing, researching and editing their topics, and are provided with extensive support and assistance from coaches and peers.

St. Cloud State University offers nearly 200 student organizations that encourage student involvement on campus. These organizations give students the opportunity to network with students who have similar interests, build experience for their resumes, gain skills for future employment and foster an active campus community.
