Anti-porn activist to speak
Saturday, September 26, 2009
Robert Jensen, anti-porn activist, author, filmmaker and feminist, will discuss the negative societal effects of pornography and screen a film called "The Price of Pleasure."
At the 6 p.m. Sept. 30 event in Ritche Auditorium, Jensen will lead a discussion that, among other things, will explore how pornography reinforces social definitions of manhood and influences men's attitudes about and treatment of women.
Jensen is a professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.
He is the author of "The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege," "Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity" and "Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity."
Jensen is co-producer of "Abe Osheroff: One Foot in the Grave, the Other Still Dancing," a film which examines the life of an activist who devoted 92 years to the cause of "radical humanism."
The film screening and Jensen's appearance are sponsored by the Women's Center.
