St. Cloud State has a number of cases of influenza-like illness consistent with H1N1, according to Brent Nielsen, physician and medical director of Student Health Services.

Medical staff are answering an increasing number of flu-related questions via telephone, according to Corie Beckermann, director.

Nielsen and Beckermann encourage students and employees to prepare for a possible bout of flu by making a personal flu plan. View the “What to Do About the Flu" document (PDF).

People should self-isolate if they get flu-like symptoms, which are defined as fever greater than 100 and a cough or sore throat.

Student Health Services will not be providing notes to confirm illness. Faculty, staff and students should plan for absenteeism, be flexible and communicate clearly about flu-like illnesses, Nielsen said.

Student Health Services is following U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommendations on H1N1, according to Nielsen.

Seasonal flu vaccine is available now. A vaccine for H1N1 is expected in November.
