Festival of Chinese cultures

Mooncakes, a dense Chinese pastry often made from lotus-seed paste. Round or rectangular in shape, they are part of the mid-autumn festival that focuses on the moon.

Campus and community are invited to celebrate abundance and togetherness at the Moonlight Festival 6:30-9 p.m. Sept. 12 in Atwood Ballroom.

Sponsored by the China Club, the event promotes awareness and appreciation for cultures in China and in overseas Chinese enclaves.

Also known as Mid-Autumn Festival, or Zhong Qiu Jie, it is the third major festival in the Chinese calendar.

It is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when the moon is at its maximum brightness.

In Malaysia and Singapore, where large numbers of Chinese have lived for generations, it is called the Lantern Festival.

Traditional celebrations include dancing, feasting and moon gazing.

At St. Cloud State the festival will be marked with food, education booths and entertainment. Guests can explore Chinese cultures through games, the Dragon Dance, a Kung Fu Panda Show and more.

One of the world's oldest civilizations, China is a multinational entity that dominates East Asia. The People's Republic of China and the Republic of China are home to a majority of those persons who call themselves Chinese. An estimated 40 million more live in nations such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, United States and Canada.
