News Release Women on WednesdayTuesday, September 1, 2009
Gender discrimination, sex trafficking, pornography and networking for change are among the themes in this fall's Women on Wednesday presentations. "Education, Advocacy and Empowerment: Celebrating 20 Years at the Women’s Center" is the title of the speaker series, which runs noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays in Atwood Theatre through Dec. 2. To celebrate 20 years of the St. Cloud State University Women’s Center, the 11 presentations will focus on the past, present and future of feminist change.
The series begins Sept. 9 with "Across the Generations: Empowering Women for More than 20 Years," featuring former and current faculty and staff of the Women’s Studies Program and Women’s Center. Panelists will discuss their experiences engaging in feminist teaching, activism and empowerment. Among the other topics are "Taking Action: Organizing Against Pornography" Oct. 14 and "Sex Trafficking in Minnesota" Nov. 4. The Nov. 18 presentation "Networks of Support: Somali women in St. Cloud" will feature members of the St. Cloud Area Somali Women’s Association. The Women’s Center promotes a safe, inclusive, engaged community through advocacy, education, alliance-building and women's leadership.
