First-year student succeeds after rough start in life

First-year student Alicia Shuman is succeeding against all odds.

Born premature at less than two pounds, Shuman avoided the fate of some "micro-preemies" -- including deafness, blindness, lung problems and brain damage -- and is now pursuing a degree in nursing.

The Eden Prairie, Minn. native and others were featured in People magazine, the St. Cloud Times and other publications.

The People magazine story includes photos of Shuman as an an infant and as a Husky Hockey cheerleader.

The micro-preemies were cared for by Ronald Hoekstra, a Children’s Hospital of Minnesota neonatal-perinatal physician who released a follow-up study on his patients this spring.
