Mass comm students facilitating Star Alert signup
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
ST. CLOUD, Minn. ‒ In an effort to encourage students, faculty and staff to sign up for the Star Alert emergency notification system, students in Professor Lisa Heinrich’s Public Relations Cases and Campaigns (COMM 438/538) class will be staffing a kiosk in Atwood Memorial Center beginning Tuesday, April 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
Kiosk dates are Tuesday and Thursday, April 7 and 9; Tuesday-Thursday, April 14-16; and Tuesday-Thursday, April 21-22.
Individuals who sign up for Star Alert at the kiosk will be able to enter their name into a drawing for a gift certificate to a local eatery or an iPod Shuffle. Student organizations will be offered a chance to compete as a group for a pizza or Subway sandwich party.
"Being a Star Alert user means I’ll be in the know if a campus emergency arises," said class member Adam Jaunich. "People have the perception that signing up for Star Alert takes too much time, but what they fail to realize is that it takes less than a minute to register."
Star Alert is an emergency notification system available to St. Cloud State University students, faculty and staff. In the event of a campus emergency, a text message will be sent to the cell phone numbers and/or personal e-mail addresses provided by the user. Star Alert is a free service; however, phone and e-mail providers may charge their normal fee. For more information about Star Alert visit www.stcloudstate.edu/emergency/staralert.asp.
Students developed their Star Alert public relations project for University Communications, which was looking for innovative ways to drive up interest and registration, said Jaunich. "The project has given our class personal experience with a real client and has allowed our ideas to become a reality."
Also in the mass communications class are Chelsea Abrahamsen, Greg Anderson, Brittany Banks, Nicole Gillespie, Aneil Kotval, Alexis Lehman, Lindsey Schmidt, Brittany Sheehy and Misty Sweeter.
