Studentsí speech, debate skills to be showcased

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University Speech and Debate (Forensics) Program, the Pi Kappa Delta Honorary Society and the Department of Communication Studies will host the 2009 Forensics Showcase from 5-6:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, in 201 Eastman Hall on campus to highlight some of the events in which students have performed at competitions this year. The showcase, free and open to the public, will include refreshments.
Performers will include students who participated recently at the Honorary Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament and Convention in Shreveport, La., where St. Cloud State finished 14th out of 63 teams from across the nation.
Performers on April 9 are sophomore Casey Schmoll, St. Cloud, Minn., and senior Anna Rooney, Rockford, Minn., duo interpretation; senior Katlyn Carlson, Cottage Grove, Minn., after dinner speaking; senior Andrea Lovoll, Northfield, Minn., impromptu; freshman Thomas Opatz, Cambridge, Minn., prose; junior Onome Egi, St. Paul, Minn., persuade; and freshman Ben Kaufman, Sauk Rapids, Minn., program of oral interpretation.
Schmoll, Kaufman and Carson had advanced to the final showcase rounds in the national tournament.
The forensics team is one of nearly 200 student organizations at St. Cloud State that give students’ leadership, management, and volunteer service/learning opportunities and which foster an active campus community.
