News Release Success at St. Cloud StateWednesday, January 21, 2009 ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Get a grip on college life. Attend a Strategies for College Success session to upgrade your skill set in areas such as motivation, time management, healthy sleep, transition to a life in Central Minnesota, friendship and anxiety. Did we mention stress management? Counseling and Psychological Services is sponsoring a dozen, free, hour-long sessions Mondays in the Glacier Room of Atwood Memorial Center. Jan. 26: Cultural Transitions Transitions can be difficult for students, especially international students. Some of what makes it difficult is leaving family and friends behind and trying to establish new relationships here. This can be especially hard when you are also coping with different foods, different norms, and perhaps in a second (or third!) language. Feb. 2: Are You or Your Siblings the First to Go to College? A Talk for First-Generation Students If your parents did not attend a four year college, you may feel that you are lacking of the support and advice that other students get. Managing the bureaucratic nature of the university can feel overwhelming. The purpose of this presentation is to provide information and support. Feb. 9: Building Healthy Relationships Every relationship experiences bumps in the road when things don’t run smoothly. Come and learn about strategies for enhancing the quality of your relationship and working through common relationship problems.
Feb. 23: Understanding and Preventing Eating Disorders March 2: Dude, Where’s My Motivation? Many students encounter problems with academic motivation. This discussion will aim to help students understand how people are motivated and what might be missing from their motivation toward school. March 16: Time Management Do you find there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done? This presentation will help you find out where your time goes. Then it will teach you some strategies for prioritizing commitments so you can find time for the important things in your life, including time for yourself.
March 23: Stress Management March 30: How to Help a Friend You are Concerned About This presentation is for anyone who has concerns about the health and well being of a friend. We'll talk about warning signs, strategies to discuss your concerns with your friend and where you can find additional help.
April 6: Healthy Sleep Sleep can play a major role in our day-to-day functioning – and some people may not be aware of the problems they have with it. Participate in a presentation regarding sleep difficulties, its effect on health, and what you can do about it. April 13: Protective Factors Against Suicide This presentation will address warning signs and symptoms of people who may be thinking of suicide. Protective factors that reduce the risk of suicide are also discussed. Come and get information on what you can do to help a friend or loved one.
April 20: Finding Joy in Life Based on the work of leading positive psychologists, this presentation will focus on incorporating strengths such as humor, originality and generosity into everyday interactions with others as a path to achieving happiness. April 27: Dealing with Anxiety This presentation is directed toward those students who may be experiencing anxiety to such a degree that it is interfering with their personal, academic or work life.
