ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The library magazine Choice has designated a book by St. Cloud State University Associate Professor Chris Lehman, “The Colored Cartoon,” a Choice Outstanding Academic Title of 2008. The book is one of 700 so honored from a pool of 7,000 books reviewed by the library journal this year.
Choice is a publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries. Each year more than 25,000 titles are submitted to the journal for review. Those selected for the "Outstanding Academic Titles" list comprise fewer than 10 percent of the titles reviewed and fewer than 30 percent of the titles submitted for review. According to Choice, "The Outstanding Academic Titles are truly 'the best of the best.'"
Lehman’s book was one of four University of Massachusetts Press titles that received the honor, the others being “Religious Liberty in America” by Bruce T. Murray, “Mission 66” by Ethan Carr and “The Culture and Sport of Skiing” by E. John B. Allen.
Lehman, who teaches in the ethnic studies department, also has authored “A Critical History of Soul Train on Television,” “The Colored Cartoon: Black Representation in American Animated Short Films” and “American Animated Cartoons of the Vietnam Era.” Lehman founded the African American studies minor at St. Cloud State and is faculty adviser for the African American Students Council on campus.
