ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Convocation 2008, Aug. 19-22, features guest speakers, workshops, receptions, presentations, awards and the Convocation Address by President Earl H. Potter III. The address is part of the opening program 9 a.m. Aug. 19 in Ritsche Auditorium. Convocation, which is produced in part by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, fosters faculty, student and staff excellence. This year's guest speaker is David Treuer, novelist, Fullbright scholar and Princeton-educated anthropologist. Treuer was raised on the Leech Lake Reservation in northwestern Minnesota, the son of Margaret Seelye Treuer, an Ojibwe tribal court judge, and Robert Treuer, an Austrian Jew and European Holocaust survivor. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Canada, a Pushcart Prize, the 1996 Minnesota Book Award and was a finalist for the Penn West prize in 1999. Treuer is the author of three novels, including 2006's "The Translation of Dr. Apelles."
