ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Two Muslim clerics and a traditional Islamic artist are among the experts on campus Monday-Friday, March 31-April 4, for Islam Awareness Week.
Sponsored by the Muslim Student Association, Islam Awareness Week aims to help non-Muslims understand the teachings of the world's second-largest religion.
Here some of the key events, which are free and open to the public:
Hamdy El-Sawaf will present "Coexistance: Misconception & Truth" 11 a.m. April 1 in Atwood Ballroom. El-Sawaf is secretary general of the Islamic Jurisprudence Council of Minnesota, an organization of imams, scholars and activists that serves as a religious authority for Minnesota Muslims. He is founder of the Al-Wafaa Center, a human services organization in Minneapolis. He also is imam for a Minneapolis mosque.
Muhammed Refii Kileci, a master of traditional Islamic art techniques, including calligraphy and water marbling, will discuss “Turkish Calligraphy and Marbling” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the Brickyard at Atwood Memorial Center. Water marbling is a method of making patterned paper by transferring color from the surface of a liquid to paper, which is then used for the endpapers in books. Kileci, a Turk, holds a doctorate in theology from Marmara University-Istanbul Institute of Social Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey. He has worked as a professor in Kazakhstan, Russia and the Netherlands. He teaches at the Islamic University of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Khalid Yasin will speak on "Islam: A Way of Life" at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the Atwood Memorial Center Ballroom. Yasin is an American-born Muslim cleric known for promoting Sharia law, the use of Islamic teachings, including the Koran, to govern civil life. He has lived and worked in Britain and Australia.
Siraj Wahhaj, who was to speak on "What is Jihad?" 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in Atwood Theatre, has canceled his appearance. Speaking in that time slot on the same topic will be Hamdy El-Sawaf, the Minneapolis imam participating in other Islam Awareness Week activities.
