Winter sports success

Luke Weber, senior diver and three-meter national champion, hails from North Mankato.

Husky Athletics made its mark at the NCAA D-II Winter Championships March 6-9 in Birmingham, Ala.

• Husky Wrestling is the national runner-up, with seven All-Americans
• Shamus O'Grady, Coon Rapids, is the 184-pound national wrestling champion
• Husky Swim and Dive earned 11 All-American nods
• Luke Weber, North Mankato, is the three-meter diving national champion

Husky Wrestling missed a national title by three points, losing to defending national champion, University of Nebraska-Kearny. Coach Steve Costanzo has led the Huskies to three consecutive second-place finishes at the national meet. Read the scsuhuskies.com story about the team.

O'Grady, a senior math education major, went 4-0, winning the title bout 12-2 against Dallas Smith of Ouachita Baptist, Arkadelphia, Ark. O'Grady's 40-1 season record ties a school mark. He was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the championships.

Seniors Andy Pokorny, a chemistry major from Bennington, Neb., and Jacob D. Horn, a construction management major from Ephrata, Wash., were national runners-up at 133-pounds and 149-pounds, respectively.

Weber, a senior pre-chiropractic major, posted a score of 563.80 for the national title and became the third male diver in school history to win a national championship. Among Coach Jeff Hegle's top achievers are Kellyn Craig, who won fourth in the 200-meter breaststroke, and Alex Bryson, who took fourth in the 1500-meter freestyle. She is a sophomore from Denver, Colo. He is sophomore from Appleton, Wis.
