Vargas named head librarian

Veteran librarian Mark Vargas begins work in July as dean of Learning Resources Services (LRS), the St. Cloud State library in the James W. Miller Learning Resources Center.
Vargas brings 25 years of leadership experience to the position. Since 2002, he has directed the Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library at Saint Xavier University in Chicago.
Previously Vargas directed the Nash Library at University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Chickasha, and worked in archival teaching and administrative duties at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge.

The LRS dean provides leadership, planning, coordination and management for information media, curriculum development, library resources, training and instructional support.
Vargas was among four finalists for the position.
Vargas has bachelor's degree in history from Indiana University Northwest, Gary. At the University of Maryland, College Park, he earned masters degrees in library science and history.
Keith Ewing, who has been interim dean since July, will serve through June 30, 2013.
