Winter storm conference

Author, consultant and scholar Jon Nelson is the keynote speaker at the Oct. 22 Northern Plains Winter Storm Conference.

Ice-crystal theorist Jon Nelson will deliver a free public presentation at the Oct. 22 Northern Plains Winter Storm Conference (NPWSC) at the Welcome Center in Coborn Plaza.

In its seventh year, the NPWSC gathers scholars, educators, forecasters and students in an informal conference setting to discuss how winter storms form and play out on North America's northern plains. Visit the conference website.

Students are $20. All others are $30. The conference fee includes a lunch. Parking is free on streets adjacent to campus and a dollar per hour in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp.

An independent scholar and consultant based in Redmond, Wash., Nelson earned his doctorate in physics at University of Washington. His dissertation, funded by a NASA fellowship, described a new theory for ice-crystal growth in clouds.

In his final year of school, Nelson earned a Department of Energy Distinguished Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship, which was used to test his theory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

In 2009, Nelson teamed with photographer Mark Cassino on "The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter's Wonder," a children's book published by Chronicle Books, San Francisco.
