Students are $20. All others are $30. The conference fee includes a lunch. Parking is free on streets adjacent to campus and a dollar per hour in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp. An independent scholar and consultant based in Redmond, Wash., Nelson earned his doctorate in physics at University of Washington. His dissertation, funded by a NASA fellowship, described a new theory for ice-crystal growth in clouds. In his final year of school, Nelson earned a Department of Energy Distinguished Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship, which was used to test his theory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. In 2009, Nelson teamed with photographer Mark Cassino on "The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter's Wonder," a children's book published by Chronicle Books, San Francisco.
