A celebration of women
Monday, April 16, 2012
Songwriter Ann Reed will present a musical tribute to heroic women 7:30 p.m. April 22 in the Ruth Gant Recital Hall at Performing Arts Center.
"Heroes: A Celebration of Women Who Changed History and Changed Our Lives" is a mixed-media presentation featuring Reed and six other performers. View the event poster (PDF).
Through music, words and visuals, Reed extends the meaning of her song "Heroes" into a theatrical statement about the social impact of women such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Sojourner Truth, Sally Ride, Billie Holiday, Corazon Aquino and Sacagawea.
The song, released independently 1991, was written in response to remark that children no longer have heroes. The song's chorus includes the couplet: "As time goes by you find you depend/On your heroes to show you the way." The song ends with a musical recitation of the names of 40 great women.
Reed, an award-winning Minneapolis-based guitarist and singer, has been recording since 1980.
She'll be joined on stage by these Twin Cities performers: Aimee K. Bryant, musical theater actor; Leslie Ball, singer-songwriter; Dan Chouinard, pianist and accordianist; Joan Griffith, guitarists and bassist; Thomasina Petrus, actor, singer and dancer; and Denise Tabet, writer-producer.
Parking is free on streets adjacent to campus and a dollar per hour in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp.
