Students at UTVS News and Husky Productions won big at this year's Broadcast Education Association (BEA) competition.
UTVS News earned first place as the best college newscast in the nation with its full half-hour news show. Husky Productions won first place with high-energy coverage of Husky Hockey games in the television sports event production category.
Called the Festival of Media Arts, the national competition hosts more than 1,500 students from 275 universities, including UCLA, Northwestern University and Columbia University. Some opponents represent campuses three times larger than St. Cloud State.
Award recipients receive their awards at the April 15-18 BEA2012 Conference at the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.
"Our news directors work incredibly hard and now that work has paid off," said Mark Mills, Mass Communication Department chair. News directors are Jennifer Austin, Champlin, and Lindsey Branwall, Shakopee.
Mills also credited television studio manager Derrick Silvestri for his work. Silvestri is a 2006 Mass Communications graduate.
Gregory Martin, Husky Productions executive producer, praised Silvestri, Wesley Beskar and the hockey production crew. Beskar, who hails from Eagan, has produced for both UTVS and Husky Productions programming. Husky Productions produces women's and men's hockey broadcasts at the National Hockey & Event Center.
