News Release Winter InstituteThursday, February 24, 2011
Business leaders, academics, community leaders and students are invited to learn more about “the jobless recession” during the 49th Winter Institute March 3 in St. Cloud.
St. Cloud State’s annual business and economic leadership summit asks presenters and participants these and other questions: Is the jobless recession due to outsourcing or lack of skilled workers? What skills do employers need to stay on the cutting edge? What does the New Economy have in store for workers and employers? Four prominent economists will present on topics tied to the theme "Tomorrow’s Workforce: Demand & Supply":
A discussion panel will feature economists Fitzgerald, Hotchkiss and Heckman with business leaders Bryan Myres and Jill Magelssen. Myres, a St. Cloud State graduate, is head of sales for ING Direct USA, the nation's foremost online banking-services firm. Magelssen is the local franchise owner for Express Employment Professionals, a multinational network of employment agencies. Presenting the luncheon address will be Chris Farrell, economics editor for Marketplace Money, American Public Media's nationally syndicated personal finance program on public radio. As in the past, the Winter Institute features the 2011 Economic Outlook, which includes regional, state and national forecasts. Providing analysis will be St. Cloud State economics professors Rich MacDonald and King Banaian, as well as Thomas Stinson, economist for the State of Minnesota, and Steven Hine, director of labor market information research for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Winter Institute parking is free on streets adjacent to campus. Parking in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp is $1 per hour. Events are in Atwood Memorial Center and Ritsche Auditorium.
