News Release History Day @ SCSUWednesday, December 29, 2010
Middle school and high school students participating in Central Minnesota History Day @ SCSU should register by Jan. 7. Central Minnesota History Day @ SCSU is 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in the James W. Miller Learning Resources Center. Check-in begins at 10 a.m. View the online registration form. The National History Day theme is “Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences.” More than a half-million students, encouraged by thousands of teachers nationwide, are expected to participate in the contest. Culminating events include State History Day May 1 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the national contest in June at the University of Maryland at College Park. Participants will learn about history research resources available at the Miller Center and other Minnesota libraries. They will learn to find books and how to use online databases. Students may also request materials from other libraries through the interlibrary loan service provided by the Central Minnesota Libraries Exchange. St. Cloud State librarians and history and education students will help participants find books, articles and other resources, write bibliographies, focus topics, analyze and present information, and add depth and personalized history to projects. Teachers should register to bring their classes. Registration must include any adults who will accompany the student or group, including volunteers and parents. Students may register themselves if they are not part of a group coming with a teacher. Space is limited so register soon. Students will be introduced to “Minnesota Reflections,” a growing collection of more than 55,000 digital copies of historical treasures from across Minnesota. They'll also learn about the Electronic Library for Minnesota. Lunch will be provided to registered participants. Parking in all St. Cloud State surface lots, including the pay lot on the north of the Miller Center, is free on weekends. Parking is available on nearby streets as well. Fees apply in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp. Central Minnesota History Day @ SCSU is sponsored by these St. Cloud State entities: History Department, Learning Resources & Technology Services, College of Social Sciences and the College of Education. External sponsors include the Minnesota Historical Society, Central Minnesota Libraries Exchange and the Minnesota Digital Library. << Previous | Archive | Next >>
