"A 1970 graduate of Concordia College, Bruce taught at Luverne, MN for 5 years, Wayzata, MN for 1 year and finished his 34 years at Anoka High School in Anoka, MN. Bruce earned his Masters degree in 1978 from Bemidji State University. Besides his teaching duties, Bruce was the director of music and adult choir director at the Anoka United Methodist Church, was on the education staff at St. Olaf College for 11 years, and founded his own select adult chorus, The Two Rivers Chorale.Bruce Phelps

Through his time in Anoka Bruce also served for five years as the director of the South St. Paul Male Chorus, eight years as director of the 3M Male Chorus, and nine years as director of music and adult choir director at Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka. He has been guest clinician at numerous choral festivals in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alaska, and Virginia, was the director of the Minnesota All State Men’s Choir in 2005-2006, and serves as master adjudicator for the Minnesota State High School League where he runs certification clinics for music judges.

Following his time at Anoka High School, Bruce served three years as Associate Director of Music Organizations at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where he organized tours for the Concordia Choir, and helped supervise all other concerts and festivals in which the choirs of Concordia College participated.

Bruce was named Outstanding Music Educator of Minnesota by the National Federation of State High School Associations in 1995. Bruce also received the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the Minnesota Music Education Association for the school year 1999-2000 for his outstanding efforts and leadership in the classroom and beyond.

Bruce is also a member of the Minnesota Music Educators Hall of Fame. Bruce has been a regional representative for the Minnesota State High School League, served as Choral Vice President for Minnesota Music Educators Association, has served on the state ACDA board and is currently a member of the FMC Endowment Board. 

Bruce is a strong advocate of sight singing and has written his own Sight Reading method which is currently being used by over 1000 schools in the United States, Canada and Korea. He has run  sight reading workshops in Virginia, Minnesota and Wisconsin.  For more information about his sight reading materials, please visit

Bruce returned to the metropolitan area in 2007 and currently serves as the Minister of Music at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton. In the Fall of 2008, The Northern Lights Chorale, under Bruce’s leadership, got its start and is now in their fifth season. Bruce and Candi now reside in Shoreview, MN.
