Music Department - St. Cloud State University

The Music Department curriculum is nationally accredited and emphasizes creativity, individual student learning and vibrant performance opportunities fostered by highly experienced and accessible faculty. The Jazz Ensemble is an 18-piece jazz group comprised primarily of undergraduate students working toward degrees in music. Selected as the best college big band at the 1989 Eau Claire Jazz Festival and invited twice in the past five years to perform at the Minnesota Music Educators Association Convention, the ensemble is noted as one of the premiere jazz ensembles in the upper Midwest.

Nationally prominent jazz artists such as Bob Berg, Marvin Stamm, Bobby Shew, Gary Foster, Bob Mintzer, Vince DiMartino and others have annually visited the SCSU campus to rehearse and perform with the band.

The group travels internationally and in 1998 participated in a ten day tour of Mexico with concerts in Mexico City and Acapulco. There are also opportunities for students to participate in small jazz combos.

Music will be performed, created, studied and taught with excellence.Music ensembles tour the state and region every year, with the Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Orchestra engaging in major national or international tours on a four year rotating basis.

Our music groups have performed in global venues, including the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, and the People's Republic of China. In addition, music ensembles have been recognized by invitations to perform for the American Choral Directors Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and in New York's prestigious Carnegie Hall.
